Background Parenchymal Enhancement and Breast Cancer Risk

A new imaging biomarker for breast MRI known as background parenchymal enhancement (BPE) was validated by BCSC investigators as a risk factor for development of primary breast cancer. Specifically, increasing level of BPE, which indicates more enhancement of normal breast parenchyma, was associated with increasing levels of breast cancer risk. Moreover, this risk appears to be independent of known risk factors such as BCSC risk score or breast density.
