|Are there any potential risks to having a screening mammogram? (Part 4)|
|Yes, you should know about some
possible problems with having routine mammograms.
4. Diagnostic tests are required if you have an abnormal mammogram result, and these tests may cause pain, anxiety and inconvenience.
If you have an abnormal mammogram result, you will need to have further test(s) and you may need to see a surgeon to determine whether or not you have cancer (see question 9) While none of the diagnostic tests are dangerous, needle aspiration and surgical biopsy may cause discomfort and surgical biopsy will result in loss of some breast tissue. You may have to make extra visits to the doctor to have these tests. Studies have also shown that women with abnormal mammograms who require extra diagnostic tests have more anxiety and worry about having breast cancer, even after being told they do not have cancer.
